REVEIW:
General impressions:
I got this car delivered right from Japan. Had been waiting for 25 days after the request. It was shipped in a container (it was even covered with sea salt). As I was expecting, it started right away, very easily, even though it was 25oC outside and the oil had been made for Japan (which means it was summer oil). Together with the car I ordered four 225/70 R15 winter tires for $250 (not bad), and two storage batteries for $100.
I took my car to the MITSUBISHI service center to carry out diagnostics and change all the fluids. I was only embarrassed by the leaking steering column, torn rubber gaiter on the right-hand c-v joint, and the deceased trunk posts (they simply refuse to work in our frosty conditions I found this out when I bought brand new ones and they failed just as well).
I have changed the gaiter, and now I add some 20 ml. oil to the steering column about once a month, which is cheaper than buying a new one so far.
But that's enough for the demerits.
The car is really versatile: I use it for family rides and for countryside outings, and it runs excellent in the city (4WD, big mirrors, and we are always given way on roads, because the car is so big).
It's very warm inside, even hot. The two heaters are doing pretty well, however if you have to take a company of slightly tight friends with you, the windows do steam up.
As for fuel consumption, when driving moderately and in winter (4WD plus the winter mode of the automatic transmission, see below) you can easily keep within 16 liters, but if you are a more aggressive driver, even 18 won't be enough. However, I think the consumption will go down in summer.
The car is equipped with Super Select transmission that has four positions:
2H - rear-wheel drive
4H - 4-wheel drive with self-locking differential (you can use it all the time in fact, but in influences fuel consumption)
4HLc - 4-wheel drive with locked differential (this mode is intended only for driving on impassable roads, otherwise it may lead to transmission damage, tire wear, and poor maneuverability)
4LLc - the same but low range.
The automatic transmission has the following positions:
P for parking.
R for going rearward.
N neutral (traffic jam, going in a tow)
D for going forward.
2 low gear (towing another vehicle).
L for impassable roads.
It is a bad idea to shake the car when its stuck in the mire (that is to change from D to R infinitely) - it may fail to stand such treatment.
The car can also run in the sports mode and winter mode, as well as the OD (overdrive) mode.
So, I think this is all I can say about my car as for now.
P.S. I'm going to buy another one in a couple of years and it sure is going to be MITSUBISHI DELICA.
